How To Plant Onions
Planting onions is simple. If onions are planted, they take around a month to come up. On the other hand, if you are planting onion bulbs, it takes a little over three months to mature. The best time to plant onions is when the temperature is cool, about 55 to 70 degrees. Just as the leaves and roots develop a higher temperature is necessary.
The onions should be grown in free soil, well drained, which, has a large number of organic substances contained therein. Make sure that the soil pH is an average of 6.5 and for this test the soil. When you plant more than one line, make sure that each row has a gap of nine inches. Place a layer of soil over the seeds of onion and water them. The germination should occur in about 21 days. Once the seedlings begin to move through the soil, they can be thinned 1 to 2 inches apart. After a few weeks the plants can be thinned around 5.5 inches. Keep a constant eye on re-sprouting of the shoots as it is important to monitor the arrival of curious birds such as pigeons and black birds which are often attracted to this plant. The lack of adequate protection can result in loss of almost all cultures. It is very important to keep the weeds that grow in the onion patch away.
